Proponents & Opponents Working Together to Keep Kansas Kids Safe

Feb 28, 2011

Kansas Rights 4 Kids appreciates comments from both proposition and opposition as it helps us to see both sides of this.  There have been many that have kindly pointed out something that we did not see or realize with our bill.  We were then able to change those things to make the bill even better.  We thank them for taking the time to contact us and give us their thoughts on the matter.

Please be assured Senator Olson has been working with the Kansas Department of Corrections, the KBI, Legislative Research, local law enforcement as well as Kansas residents regarding the contents of the bill. It was not produced hastily or without knowing all the arguments for and against. Please note however the Kansas Department of Corrections came and testified as a proponent to this bill during the Senate Judiciary hearing this month, after some compromises were made. Completely removing the residency restriction was not one of those compromises.  During our Senate Judiciary testimony one of the opponents stated with some tweaking to the bill they would support it.  Those changes have been consider and supported.  We are working with others to create the best bill possible.

We know that these laws will not guarantee Kansas children will not be assaulted but they will put one more barrier between our precious children and child sex offenders.  What we have discovered over the last few months is that the general public, parents and non-parents, believe that this type of law already exists, creating a true false sense of security. By creating these types of laws only keeps our kids that much safer.  We will continue advocate educating children regarding familial and acquaintance molestation, as well as stranger danger, however educating children has been proven not to be enough.
